Affect in psychology means emotions or feelings. To borrow from Rollo May, late existential psychologist, “Affect is not something you strive for in itself but a by-product of the way you give yourself to a life situation.” How do you give yourself to your life situations? Therapy is for everyone because we ALL give ourselves to life situations…every day. This is vastly different than looking at life as a series of circumstances that happen to us. We often think, "Isn’t it better for me to solve problems on my own?" I don’t solve your problems for you. Rather, I will help you clarify issues so you CAN solve problems on your own. The goal of therapy is to make you more self-sufficient, not more dependent. Becoming more self-sufficient is directly related to deeper self-understanding, in essence knowing yourself better. What a wonderful gift to give yourself.
